Dr. Pop-Busui research interests extend from the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the development of diabetic complications to the design and execution of clinical trials to assess the efficacy of new therapeutic interventions. Dr. Pop-Busui has been and is a  site PI on many major  clinical trials sponsored by  NIH such as ACCORD, BARI 2D and DCCT/EDIC and NEUROEDIC and by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She is  also PI  on grants from the National Institute of Health exploring the role of cylcooxygenase-2 in the development of peripheral diabetic neuropathy and from the American Diabetes Association exploring  the relationship between components of the metabolic syndrome, in the presence of prediabetic range glucose elevations, and oxidative stress in the development of cardiac autonomic neuropathy and the effects of a lifestyle interventions in subjects with metabolic syndrome. She is actively involved in studying the development of new treatments and diagnostic evaluations for diabetes and diabetic complications with emphasis on diabetic neuropathy and to assess the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions designed to halt or reverse the progression of chronic diabetic complications and especially of diabetic neuropathies.
